My role on the project: Lead Android Developer
Status: 1st Place Winner – DSC Solve 2024

Chapter I - The Motivation & SDG 11

Sustainable Development Goal 11

The inspiration for Daur came from a stark reality: Indonesia currently recycles only 15.2% of its waste and is the world’s second-largest plastic polluter. Even more locally, research from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry labeled our own hometown, Medan, as one of the dirtiest cities in Indonesia.

To tackle this, our three-person team aligned our project with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. We realized that to create lasting environmental change, we couldn’t just educate people, we had to actively incentivize them.

Chapter II - The Solution & Gamification

Daur App Interfaces

Daur is an Android application that gamifies the recycling process. Users can deposit their sorted waste (plastics, paper, cans) at designated Daur locations to earn points.

To maximize user retention, we implemented an RPG-like progression system. As users recycle more and level up, they unlock access to higher-tier merchant vouchers. The application also serves as an interactive educational hub, providing users with clear guidelines on how to properly sort and process their daily waste.

Chapter III - Architecture & Integration

Daur Architecture

As the Lead Android Developer, I architected the core mobile client from the ground up using Kotlin, applying strict SOLID principles to ensure a highly maintainable and scalable codebase.

My main focus was seamlessly bridging an intuitive frontend UI with a robust cloud ecosystem. I integrated Google ML Kit for fast, on-device machine learning, and wired the client to a modern serverless backend powered by HonoJS, NeonDB (PostgreSQL), and Cloudflare Workers. Delivering this fully polished, end-to-end integration under a tight deadline was a critical factor in securing our 1st place victory at DSC Solve 2024.
